He Wins, She Wins, Who Wins?

Sonu Nigam, I Am Sorry, but Chitra can console you.

Let me give you an example of how the movie awards are given. When my mother was in the committee for film awards a few years back, she awarded the ‘Best Female Playback Singer’ award to Chitra for the movie ‘Chandramukhi Pranasakhi’. Since my mother was the expert in music, pretty much everyone agreed. But, there was one section of the committee which suggested that the award be given to Chitra, but for a different song from a different movie. Even that was a melodious song and rest of the people in the committee started agreeing to that suggestion. My mother’s main point was that the award HAD to go to Chitra because she had sung very well. They checked and saw that the other song was also sung by Chitra. Since a few people in the committee had reservations about the original song, plus the fact that the second song was also sung by Chitra, the award was announced for the second song.

Guess what??? The producers of the other movie had intentionally given the name of the singer as Chitra for the second song. It was infact sung by Latha Hamsalekha. After the awards were announced, the producers came out and said that the song was sung by Latha Hamsalekha and not Chitra, and thus the award was finally given to Latha Hamsalekha. Obviously, they had ‘booked’ a few people in the awards committe. That also explained why nobody had answers when my mother asked them as to why Chitra’s voice was different in the second song. My mother realized that being naive and straightforward are not good traits to be in a politically tainted awards committee.

  2. Hmmmm same old story!

  3. neel3 Says:

    rules change every year.
TNS didnt give an award to Ramya saying she had not ‘spoken’ in the movie (Amritadhaare).
He went on to make a film with her and used her voice. just when it was to be released, he dubbed with someone else’s voice!!
Does it automatically exclude her from the award next year?

  4. mouna Says:

neela, is that true?!?! i’ve returned after seeing this particular movie. that’s so unfair. and she’s played appreciably well(apart from her mindblowing looks!!) 😀

everybody comments on the validity of various things. but when a similar situation occurs, we readily backtrack on our golden words. some sense here. aha! TNS showed the way! super!

  5. Veena Says:

Thats a sad story but.. I wonder if Chitra was after all looking for that award as she had already had wide acceptance already.

May be these selections are like appraisals, if ur supervisor has decided to give u a particular rating, he would give no matter what!! haha.
Today’s TOI carried a very intersting piece of artcle which talks about kiran bedi loosing her chance to become delhi commisioner since she lacks in networking and boozing buddies and the article talks about how men get their promotions/feathers 🙂

    POLITICS, POLITICS EVERYWHERE !

  7. bachodi Says:

Politics .. so much ? Thats why industry is like that.

  8. suparna Says:

it s not only in singing , but in all fields.. even our rajyothsava awards are not free from lobbying .. even if one deservingly gets the award , there s so much of critisism ( for eg , best actress award for this year has lot of controversy ) , i m sure the artist feels worse than not getting it !

Yeah, I had such a laugh when i read that news item last week. On that note, poor Sonu, nobosy should be harassed, really.

    @ Srik:
True, but well, we know what to expect these days.

    @ neel3:
yes, rules change every year, and the rule is different for each person, remember that.

    @ Mouna:
Yep, comment is public property 🙂

    @ Veena:
yes, even my mother had to console herself saying Chitra had tons of awards already. But, what if it happened to some newbie? Yes, Kiran bedi story is quite sad. I used to like Manmohan Singh much more when I used to see his signature on the five rupee notes.

    @ Aram:
We can’t live without it, can we?

    @ Bachodi:
Well, it’s not limited to film industry though.

    @ Suparna:
Oh, let’s not even get started on the Rajyothsava awards. I have way too many juicy stories, if you like 😉

just curious, but how was it that (most) everybody checked and liked the song by the other singer, without really realizing that it was not chitra? would be similar to a committee listening to mahendra kapoor and voting for rafi (mkaps will end up with the booty if the analogy holds)!

  12. @ DG:
You should work for a detective agency, for finding out my number and calling me even before I sent it to you 🙂 And yes, it was very nice talking to you.

    @ SB:
My guess is that a small group was ‘bought’. I don’t know about the rest. Either the discussions happened after the songs were ehard, so not many people remembered, or that a lot of them were musically challenged (which is quite possible).

  13. Poppins Says:

Oh my god, is that how it is.. I knew there was some harakiri going on in these awards but I didn’t know that it was to this extent ! boy.

  14. @ Poppins:
Yes it is. These things work like magic!!!
